GEORGIA — An unidentified black male jumped from a window at the Fulton County Pre-Trial Services Office Tuesday morning in downtown Atlanta.

The man, in his 20s, was at the Office to undergo intervention for a drug charge.

Not long after the man arrived at the building, a janitor found a loaded .25-caliber handgun outside the building, AJC reported. The gun had been concealed in documents that contained the man’s name.

After the weapon was discovered, the man was handcuffed and placed in a conference room, that’s when he told police he did not want to go back to jail.

The man then immediately made a desperate escape attempt by jumping through the window.

“This man was coming out of the window backwards. He had handcuffs on,” a witness told 11Alive. “This man came out, hit his head on one of those poles, and he hit that ground. When he hit that ground, he was not moving.”

He landed face first on the sidewalk and later died from his injuries.

“I heard some people scream and people scatter,” another witness told WSB-TV. “I was just in shock.”

Atlanta police called the scene tragic.

An investigation is ongoing.
