TUCSON, Arizona — Officers shot a fleeing suspect who exchanged gunfire with them Saturday afternoon, at the same address where a homicide occurred the night before, police said:

Detectives are continuing their investigation into yesterday’s officer involved shooting. Details are still limited but detectives have released that the suspect who was transported to the hospital yesterday, has died from his injuries. Next of kin has been notified; however his name is being withheld until detectives can finish speaking with potential witnesses.

The officers involved in the shooting were Officer Brendon Brumitt, a 4-year veteran with the department and Officer Matthew Gustafson, who has been with the department for just over a year.

INITIAL REPORT: The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating an officer involved shooting that took place early yesterday evening.

On August 1, 2015, at approximately 4:50 p.m., officers from Operations Division West responded to 38 West Prince Road reference a suspicious activity call. Officers with the Tucson Police Department had been dispatched to the same location the previous evening for a homicide investigation.

The caller reported that a male and female were near where the homicide took place and appeared to be looking around the area. Two officers were dispatched to the call and located the couple when they arrived. As they attempted to make contact, the male ran from the officers and a short foot pursuit ensued. During the foot pursuit, gunfire was exchanged between the male suspect and both officers.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and officers rendered first-aid using their Individual First Aid Kits (IFAK). Tucson Fire transported the suspect to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Both officers were uninjured during the shooting.

Detectives from the Homicide Unit and the Office of Internal Affairs responded to continue the investigation. As is standard practice in all officer involved shootings, the Homicide Unit will conduct a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Office of Internal Affairs will conduct a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel in response to this incident.

Limited details are being released at this time while detectives continue their investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

If you have any information about this incident you are urged to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
