NEW YORK — State Police responded to a residence in Chestertown Thursday when the caller reported finding hand grenades inside an old car he was restoring.

The caller was in the process of restoring a 1959 Austin-Healey mini car. When he was working on the engine compartment, he discovered three World War II era explosive devices hidden inside the heater box. Two were empty hand grenade shells which posed no threat. However, the third device, which appeared to be an old sub munition, was treated as a live explosive.

The State Police Bomb Disposal Unit responded to the scene and safely removed the items which will be destroyed.
