LOS ANGELES — A 30-year-old man was sentenced today to 28 years, eight months to life in state prison for killing the boyfriend of his estranged wife in 2014, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On May 17, a jury found Guillermo Hector Diaz of Carson guilty of six felony counts in case TA136133: one count each of first-degree murder and first-degree residential burglary and two counts each of resisting executive officer and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.

The jury also found true a special allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the commission of the crime.

Deputy District Attorneys Adrian Roxas and Marlene Martinez of the Victim Impact Program, who co-prosecuted the case, said on Dec. 22, 2014, Diaz broke into his estranged wife’s South Los Angeles apartment.

Once inside, the defendant confronted his estranged wife and her boyfriend before stabbing the man several times with a pocketknife, prosecutors said.

The violent attack occurred in front of the female victim’s 6-year-old daughter, prosecutors added.

When the estranged wife and her daughter tried to call police, Diaz prevented them from doing so, prosecutors said.
