Northwest Baltimore — Damon Alexander, a Black Guerilla Family gang member, was sentenced to two Life sentences plus 110 years for a mass shooting outside of a store in November 2016. Alexander was convicted of two counts of first degree murder; two counts of attempted first degree murder; two counts of attempted second degree murder; and several handgun charges.
Assistant State’s Attorney Elizabeth Stock prosecuted the case.
On November 30, 2016 at approximately 6:00 p.m., police responded to a call for a shooting at a business located in the 2900 block of Garrison Boulevard. Upon arrival, six victims were located throughout the store and parking lot area. Davon Dozier was found dead directly in front of the entrance to the convenience store; Troy Smothers was located near him and transported to Shock Trauma, where he was pronounced deceased at 6:58 p.m. Two additional victims were located near the store, and the remaining two victims were located within a few blocks.
Investigation revealed that several of the victims were standing in a group outside the store when Alexander approached from around the corner and started shooting at the group— striking all of them and two others who were also outside the store. Alexander then directed his attention to Dozier, shooting him several more times while standing over him.
Witnesses were interviewed and gave accounts of the shooting that were consistent with video surveillance that captured the incident. A witness was shown a photo array, and positively identified Alexander as the shooter.
Alexander gave a statement when he was arrested, denying he was the shooter and claiming he was somewhere else at the time of the murder. Authorities analyzed cell site information from Alexander’s phone and determined he was near the location at the time of the shooting.
“We know that this case is an act of retaliatory violence in reference to another violent incident that occurred just in that same area,” Police Comm. Kevin Davis said.
“I vividly remember this evening, as I couldn’t fathom the atrocity of this brutal attack outside of a convenience store, and the heartless nature of this defendant,” said State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby. “This is was a cold and callous crime, for which this defendant will spend the rest of his life in jail—the toughest penalty allowable under Maryland law.”
