Governor Larry Hogan has declared a state of emergency in response to the increase in numbers of deaths related to opioids and heroin in Maryland.

“Here in Maryland, heroin and opioid related deaths have doubled in the last year in our state,” Governor Hogan said.

“We need to treat this crisis the exact same way that we would treat any other state emergency,” he said.

“This is about taking an all-hands-on-deck approach so that together we can save the lives of thousands of Marylanders,” Hogan said. “As this crisis evolves, so must our response to it and we cannot do it alone. It will take everyone from the federal, state and local levels as well as the private sector and community leaders, faith-based leaders and even families, working together to finally begin to turn the tide in this difficult fight.”

Maryland recorded 1,468 overdose-related deaths from January-September 2016, surpassing 2015’s total of 1,259.
