This photograph shows the moment a team of firefighters performed CPR on a car they rescued from a burning house in New York.

The black-and-white cat, named Kit Kat, was carried to safety as a blaze tore through the two-storey property on 88th Street in Glendale, Queens, New York, on Sunday morning.

Dedicated police officers and firefighters took turns treating Kit Kat on the sidewalk before it was taken to a nearby animal hospital alongside a second cat rescued from the blaze.

In one photograph, two uniformed firefighters are seen crouched on the ground next to Kit Kat as they stroke underneath its chin and try to open its airway.

Another image shows a police officer kneeling next to the cat as it lies unconscious on the ground.

Kit Kat and the other cat, named Jinx, were taken to a hospital run by BluePearl Veterinary Partners, where they were put in a special oxygen chamber and treated for smoke inhalation.

Jinx has has almost fully recovered while Kit Kat is still showing signs of distress and is having difficulty walking, according to a statement released by the veterinary group.

The practice’s manager, Paul Miranda, said he had spoken with the owner and that she was extremely grateful her cats were rescued and that they are receiving good care.

Frankie’s Friends, a national pet charity that assists pets with life-threatening conditions, is stepping in to raise money to help pay for the cats’ treatment, which is estimated to cost about $8,000.
