A mother now stands accused of murdering her newborn baby girl by throwing her out of a seventh-floor window has now appeared in court.

Jennifer Berry, 33, allegedly hurled the girl, who was less than three weeks old, from an apartment window in the Bronx neighbourhood of New York City.

The nameless baby was found dead in an alleyway last week. She had died from the fall and still had her umbilical cord attached.

Prosecutors said she first told officers she had not even been pregnant.

They said she later admitted giving birth to the girl in the shower.

She is said to have then claimed the girl wasn’t breathing when she threw her – and the placenta – out of the window.

According to the New York Times, Berry was a charity worker for the Puerto Rican Family Institute and had also had jobs in child protection.

Berry’s first child, a boy, also died shortly after he was born in 2008. At the time a medical examiner said he died of natural causes, but prosecutors are now reviewing the case.
