HENRICO COUNTY, Virginia — 25-year-old Laquanda Newby was charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency or abuse of child after police said she left her two children inside her hot car outside the Henrico County Courthouse on Monday, reports said.

The mother was at the courthouse to turn herself in for previously leaving her children in a hot car.

From FOX8: — “On May 26, Newby was accused of leaving a child in a car while she shopped at Sam’s Club. When police arrived, they found Newby by her car and could not arrest her for the alleged crime because they had not witnessed it.” —

Instead, the officer swore out a warrant if Newby promised to later turn herself in, according to WTVR.

On Monday, Newby left the kids, ages 6 and 1, in the car outside the courthouse for around an hour. Temperatures hit 90 degrees that day. The windows of the car were rolled up and the keys were on the floorboard.

“Had a citizen not alerted us to this, it’s a situation that would’ve turned out much differently,” Henrico Sheriff’s Capt. David Kinkle said.

“Their shirts were wet, sweat rolling off their brows,” Kinkle said. “They seemed to be OK, but it was very hot.”

According to WTVR, Deputies brought the children inside the courts building and gave them water and snacks until their dad picked them up.

Newby was booked in the Henrico Jail. Her bond was later denied.
