Ascension Parish, LOUISIANA — The Sheriff’s Office responded to 18186 Pinehurst Street just before midnight following reports of yelling and screaming coming from the home.

When deputies arrived they discovered a door opened to the home with a large amount of blood throughout and no occupants.

A short time later, while investigating the Pinehurst call, the Sheriff’s Office dispatch center received a call from a Baton Rouge Hospital advising they were treating a stab victim that just arrived in critical condition.

The victim was identified as 21 year old Deshad Perry. Investigators learned that he and his live in girlfriend, 19 year old Jonqualya Benton began arguing in their home.

The couples’ one year old child and one other adult family member were present when the argument turned physical. The two were separated for a brief moment when Benton retrieved a knife and stabbed Perry once in the chest.

At this point Benton and the family member put Perry in the vehicle and rushed him to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

In 2014, deputies were called to the home of the couple to investigate a domestic incident which resulted in the arrest of Perry for domestic abuse battery.

The Sheriff’s Crime Scene investigators located a quantity of marijuana in the home along with two assault rifles. Benton admitted to investigators that the marijuana and rifles belonged to her.

Jonqualya Benton, 19, of 18186 Pinehurst Street Prairieville was arrested and charged with manslaughter, possession of schedule I CDS (marijuana) and illegal carrying of a weapon while in possession of CDS.
