NEW YORK — A group of anti-police demonstrators are planning to burn Confederate and American Flags at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn.

It’s unclear if police will arrest the protesters when the burning begins.

Fort Greene park memorializes thousands of Revolutionary War heroes.

A group called Disarm NYPD will lead the protest at Fort Greene Park at 7:30 p.m. The group says it will also burn the Confederate flag in a rally against the country’s long history of systemic racism after nine people were killed in a historic South Carolina church earlier this month.

The group wrote on their Facebook page:

June 17th, white supremacist Dylan Roof callously murdered nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina. As people across many cities have mourned and demonstrated in solidarity with the victims and their families over the past week, the Confederate flag – a symbol of racist oppression and hatred – remained raised on the South Carolina State House grounds.

We cannot ignore the roots of Dylan Roof’s savagery in America’s long history of institutionalized racism and murderous violence against black people…
Please join us on July 1st, at 7:30PM, at the intersection of Myrtle and Washington Park, to demonstrate for the Charleston nine and all of those killed by racist violence in America. We will set fire to this symbol of oppression – the American flags – and march to honor our brothers and sisters who have fallen in the long struggle for freedom. Rise up!
