NEW YORK — (NYPD News) — An NYPD Housing cop rescued two children who were left inside a locked, sweltering hot car Friday afternoon. Police Officer Robert Manley of Police Service Area 8 was approached by a frantic man who banged on his police van window.

The man alerted him to a Toyota Camry that was parked in front of 2147 Barnes Avenue with two toddlers in the rear seat with the engine off and the windows rolled up.

Officer Manley radioed for assistance to gain entry into the vehicle before retrieving an emergency “Lifehammer” that he used to break the front driver’s side window.

After unlocking the car doors, Officer Manley removed a 3-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl from the vehicle. The two toddlers had no apparent signs of distress.

The father of the children arrived at the scene a short time later, was taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The children were removed to Jacobi Hospital where they are being evaluated as a precaution.
