Police Officer Ross Garner of the 81 Precinct was recently honored by the North Shore Animal League for his actions earlier this year. On a cold and frigid day in January, a friend of Officer Garner called him to say she found a kitten in the middle of the street in their Bay Ridge, Brooklyn neighborhood alive, but motionless. She picked up the kitten and brought him home but not knowing what to do next.

So, she called Officer Garner asking for his help. He offered to take the cat to work later that day and bring it to a shelter with hopes of someone adapting the tiny feline.

After seeing the cat and bringing him to work, he admittedly thought things did not look good for the little guy. The cat looked sick and was barely moving. Determined to help him, Officer Garner feed him and provided him water. The cat, which was eventually named “Brooklyn,” quickly recovered becoming friends with everyone in the station house. One of the officers asked him what the story was about the cat and Officer Garner explained that he planned to bring Brooklyn to a shelter. After making a few phone calls, the other officer was able to inform Officer Garner he found someone that wanted the cat and would be able to pick him up the next morning.

Police Officer Garner eventually went out to work with his fellow Anti-Crime members after making sure Brooklyn was feed and being taken care of. Officer Garner then explained that this impromptu act of taking care of cats is not his usual police work, “I went out with my team and we were able to make an arrest. The suspect was wanted for multiple robberies in the Bed Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn. The suspect was also armed with a firearm when we arrested him.”

So, aside of protecting Brooklyn, Police Officer Garner was also able to, along with other 81 Precinct police officers, protect the people of New York City.

Police Officer Garner explained why he took the time to help little Brooklyn and take illegal guns off the street:

“ I want people to think highly of the NYPD. If there is something I can do, I will always do it – 100%.”

Join us in congratulating Police Officer on his award… and how he and his team are helping keep NYC safe.
