NYPD Transit Cops Arrest Fare Evader, Gun Recovered

NYPD Transit officers arrested a man in possession of an illegal handgun after they observed him illegally enter the subway station. Police Officers Jermaine Hodge, Suranjit Dey and Ronnie Zarabia from Transit District 33 were patrolling the mezzanine of Brooklyn’s New Lots Avenue Station Friday morning when they observed the man using a student Metrocard to enter the train platform.

The officers approached the man, identified themselves as police officers, and the suspect attempted to flee the train station. The suspect was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

While searching the man, officers recovered a defaced 9mm firearm in his jacket pocket, as well as a fully loaded magazine.

The 19-year-old man from Brooklyn was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3, Theft of Service, and Resisting Arrest.
