Officials in Colombia have confirmed that over 3,100 pregnant women have contracted the Zika virus.

A total of 25,645 people have been infected with the disease in Colombia.

The Zika virus has been linked to the birth defect microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with underdeveloped brains and small heads.

The US Centers for Disease Control And Prevention said the connection between the virus and microcephaly appears stronger and stronger.

The Colombian president has said they will attempt to fight mosquitoes across the country by fumigating and removing stagnant water.

Pregnant women with the Zika virus will also be able to access abortion facilities in the country.

The government has urged all women to delay pregnancy for at least six to eight months.

Local officials have said that there are between 80,000 and 100,000 unreported Zika infections in Colombia.

Over 80% of those infected with Zika show no apparent symptoms, those that do suffer with a fever, red eyes and a rash.

There is currently no treatment or vaccine for the Zika virus.

The virus has been reported in at least 30 countries since it appeared in the Americas in 2015.
