WASHINGTON – Authorities say a pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metrobus that was hijacked Tuesday morning in Washington.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said a man was taken into custody at a gas station when the bus was stopped. The pedestrian who was killed was not immediately identified. She said the suspect was “violent and resistant.”
The entire incident was less than three minutes, she said.
Lanier described the event as bizarre, saying it was rare occurrence for someone to take a bus and attack the driver. It was not immediately clear what weapon was used in the attack.
The bus driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but there were no injuries to passengers, according to Metro Transit Police.
Dustin Sternbeck, the chief spokesman for the D.C. police, said a man boarded the bus about 10:30 a.m. and stood next to the driver. At the next stop, Sternbeck said, the man attacked the driver and the passengers were able to get out the back entrance. The driver also managed to get off the bus.
The man then drove the bus a short distance to the gas station parking lot, where it jumped two curbs before hitting the pedestrian.
