Police Lieutenant Is Shot and Killed While Trying To Help Citizen, Lt. Aaron Allan Was 38-Years-Old

HOMECROFT, Indiana – The Southport Police Department is mourning the tragic loss of Lieutenant Aaron Allan who was killed in the line of duty after he was shot while trying to help.

Today around 2:30 p.m., Lieutenant (Lt) Aaron Allan with the Southport Police Department was dispatched to the intersection of South Madison and Maynard avenues reference a crash with entrapment. A Homecroft police officer also responded.

As Lt. Allan approached the inverted vehicle to assist, shots were fired by one of the vehicle’s occupants. Lt. Allan was struck by gunfire at least one time. EMS personnel responded and transported Lt. Allan to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Despite the best life-saving efforts of medical professionals at Eskenazi Hospital Lt. Allan was tragically pronounced dead.

The Homecroft police officer and an off-duty Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy, who had stopped to help, returned fire striking one of the individuals. Both people inside the car were taken to Eskenazi Hospital, one for injuries sustained from being shot, and the other from injuries believe sustained during the crash. Both occupants of the vehicle are being held at Eskenazi detention awaiting further investigation by homicide investigators.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Critical Incident Response Team, is handling the criminal and officer-involved shooting investigations.

Lt. Allan (38) has nearly 6-years of service with the Southport Police Department and over 20 years of law enforcement experience.
