MARYLAND — Baltimore County Police are investigating after a Halethorpe man shot someone trying to break into his car.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, police responded to a home in the 100 block of Hazel Avenue 21227 for a report of a theft from auto. The investigation has indicated that a 44-year-old man observed a suspect breaking into his vehicle so he took a rifle outside and confronted the suspect.

The suspect swung a knife or screwdriver at him and he shot the suspect once.

The 17-year-old suspect fled the scene, but was later located and taken into custody. He was treated at an area hospital for a gunshot wound to an upper extremity.

The suspect has been identified at 17-year-old Timothy James Rivera of the 200 block of Furrow Street 21223. Rivera has been charged as an adult with firs-degree assault, theft, and related charges. He is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

The case remains under investigation.
