St. Pete Beach, Florida — A beachcomber found the device early Sunday morning and thought it was a log, the barnacle-crusted, four-foot-long bomb’s presence promted a beach evacuation, the construction of a sand berm around the object, and the involvement of nearby MacDill Air Force Base’s explosive ordinance disposal team.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that visitors lined up folding chairs on the other side of the 1,400-foot perimeter around the bomb and cheered as the device was blown up.
