A fifty-car pile-up has shut down a highway after severe weather hit the region causing drivers to lose control of their vehicles.

The I-78 outside Harrisburg was a scene of devastation this morning, with lorries, cars and tankers involved in the huge crash.

Initial reports indicate the crash was fatal and images from social media showed people with blood being loaded onto air ambulances.

The crash came after storm alters were issued for the Philadelphia area.

Multiple vehicles collided as 30mph winds hit the road, which has now been shut down on both sides.

The exact number of fatalities is not yet known, but more than 40 people have been taken to hospitals and over 70 were taken to a makeshift shelter.

A driver on the I-78 reported to local media: ‘The snow just started and it was a total whiteout. The car in front of us just disappeared,’ she told NBC News.

‘We were able to stop, but a couple cars slid and hit the shoulder.’

She added that the whole westbound side of the highway was ‘just a mess’.
