Early Sunday morning, around 3:25 a.m., patrol units from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) San Francisco Area office were investigating a multiple vehicle collision east bound on the Bay Bridge approximately a mile west of the Toll Plaza. All lanes at this location were closed for the investigation.

About 20 minutes later, uniformed CHP officers observed a vehicle driving towards them on the right shoulder into the scene of investigation and causing a safety concern. CHP officers gave commands for the driver of a red vehicle to stop. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and continued driving towards the officers.

A CHP officer felt threatened as the vehicle continued coming towards him and discharged several rounds at the driver of the vehicle, striking the driver, and causing the vehicle to stop.

Emergency medical services were summoned to the scene and the suspect was transported to a local hospital with injuries.

The other passengers in the vehicle, none of whom were struck by gunfire, were detained for further investigative purposes.

No further details were available.
