JEFFERSON PARISH, Louisiana — Around 11:02 AM this morning, officers were dispatched to a multiple stabbing at 4805 Brandi Street in Marrero. An 18 year-old female, who is the daughter of the female victim, made the discovery upon returning home from a hunting trip.

She fled the home and called 911 to report the incident.

First responding officers located the bodies of a 46-year-old male, identified as David Mata, and a 40-year-old female, identified as Kelli Mata, lying on the floor in the living room with stab wounds. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

During a cursory check on the remaining rooms inside of the home, our officers discovered the bodies of a two-year-old male, identified as Liam Mata and a four-year-old male, identified as Caden Mata, in separate bedrooms.

Both children appeared to have suffered a stab wound. They too, were pronounced dead on the scene.

There’s been no history of domestic violence calls to the home, said Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office. Neighbors described the family as “picture perfect.”

He was such a good person,” said a friend of Kelli Mata’s 18-year-old daughter, who discovered the crime. “He was happy with her.” The two friends are seniors at Fisher Middle-High School in Jean Lafitte; Kelli Mata had another daughter as well, the friend said.

Indeed, David Mata’s Facebook page is filled with photos of him and his wife, arms around each other and smiling. Their towheaded sons pose proudly in superhero Halloween costumes.

Mata was from Spain, and the couple had been married since April 2012. His Facebook profile speaks of the power of keeping God in one’s heart.”

Preliminarily, this matter is being investigated at time as a murder-suicide.
