Suspect in Custody After Killing 2, Kidnapping Woman In Florida, Police Say

GAINESVILLE, FLA – A Gainesville man is in custody following a double shooting that left two dead in a southwest Gainesville apartment complex.

Shortly after 1:30pm Tuesday afternoon, police were called to Summer Place Apartments, 3316 SW 41st Place after a reported shooting. Police arrived and found two males deceased in the apartment office with apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators immediately began working leads to identify the suspect – and also learned that a female was reportedly taken hostage from the scene by the suspect. Intelligence led officers to determine that the suspect was likely traveling north on I-75. Information about the suspect’s vehicle and direction of travel was relayed to Georgia law enforcement.

Members of Georgia State Patrol and Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle traveling north on I-75 and were able to stop the vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody and the female was recovered safe. A firearm was located in the vehicle and investigators will attempt to determine if it was the firearm used in the shooting.

Officer Ben Tobias, the agency’s spokesperson praised the work of all the officers that worked to apprehend the suspect so quickly. “Law enforcement is all about teamwork,” said Tobias. “This afternoon, officers and investigators from GPD were able to work seamlessly with our brothers and sisters in Georgia to identify, locate, and arrest a homicide suspect in less than 2 hours from the time of dispatch. I’m proud to work alongside such a dedicated group of professionals.”
