Suspect who shot Houston deputy while handcuffed identified

HOUSTON, TX — Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance call on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, between a female and her ex-husband now identified as Matthew Vincent Cobb, 35.

Cobb was located at 2527 Kiplands Way drive in north Harris County.

While on scene, Cobb was detained after charges of deadly conduct were accepted by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for threating his ex-wife earlier in the evening.

After being handcuffed, Cobb produced a pistol and opened fire at Deputies.

Deputy P. Mirrielees, a two year veteran was struck by gunfire.

Deputy Mirrielees was transported to Memorial Herman Hospital-Woodlands via ambulance.

At the time of transport Deputy Mirrielees was conscious and alert.
He has since been released from the hospital, and is recovering at home.
Deputy Mirrielees is assigned to the Cypresswood Community Association contract.

A male roommate at the scene was struck multiple times by gunfire.

The roommate was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital-Downtown via life flight in critical but stable condition.

Patrol deputies held the perimeter of the home until the Harris County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and Hostage Negotiators arrived on scene.

Cobb remained inside the residence with a female roommate.

She was able to escape the residence when members of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team were clearing the first floor of the home.

Sheriff’s Office negotiators were unable to make contact with Cobb during the standoff.

A robotic camera was placed in the home, and was able to locate the body of Cobb in an upstairs bathroom.

SWAT personnel were able to enter the room, and Emergency Medical Technicians pronounced Cobb deceased.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Science will determine cause of death on Cobb.
