NEW YORK — Two teens were wounded, one fatally, during a stabbing at a Bronx school Wednesday. It was the first time in 25 years that a student was killed inside of a classroom in New York City.
The violent crime occurred at a school building on Mohegan Avenue in East Tremont.
WABC reported: Officials said the preliminary investigation revealed that there was an ongoing dispute lasting about two weeks between the two victims and an 18-year-old — all believed to be students — that escalated into a fight on the fifth floor in the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation.
Both victims were taken to the hospital where the 16-year-old victim later died.
The alleged suspect, 18, was taken into police custody nearby—a switchblade knife was also recovered.
“All our hearts are very heavy right now,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “This is a painful, painful tragedy. For the families, we will do all we can to support them. And we will do all we can to support the school community, which is reeling right now because of this incident.”
“It has been many, many years in this city since we’ve lost a child in a school in this kind of violent incident, and it is all the more troubling for that reason,” de Blasio said. “It’s unacceptable to ever lose a child to violence in a school building, and we will redouble our efforts to protect every child. We will use every measure to make sure every child is safe.”
