KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE — Prosecutors in DA Charme Allen’s Major Crimes Unit obtained a conviction against a man who slit the throat of his eighty-four-year-old grandmother. After only thirty minutes of deliberation, a Knox County jury found William Grant Morgan, 34, guilty of First Degree Murder and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Upon conviction, Judge Scott Green sentenced Morgan to life in prison.
In a two-day trial, Assistant District Attorney Leslie Nassios and Deputy District Attorney Kyle Hixson explained to the jury that on the night of June 2, 2011, Morgan used a pocket knife to stab his maternal grandmother when she was in her bed in an apartment the two shared. In addition to stabbing his grandmother multiple times, Morgan also cut her throat. The next morning, Morgan called 911 and told dispatchers he killed his grandmother and also cut himself.
“The only way to protect society from offenders who would so brutally murder the most vulnerable members of our community is to lock them up for as long as possible,” said DA Charme Allen.
