ROUND ROCK, Texas — A sheriff’s deputy has been shot and killed near Austin, according to the Texas county sheriff’s office.
Officials have now identified the sheriff’s deputy as Sergeant Craig Hutchinson, a 32-year veteran officer.
Police in Austin shut down the I-35 as the body of the deputy was escorted from a hospital in Round Rock to the Travis County medical examiners office.
A spokeswoman for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office says the officer used his radio to call for help shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday.
Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said via Twitter: “Please keep our Travis County Sheriff’s family in your thoughts and prayers. Sad, troubling time we live in. Austin police stands with our friends.”
