British Prime Minister Theresa May intends to trigger article 50 of the Lisbon treaty that starts the process for the UK to formally leave the European Union without a parliament vote, the Telegraph reports.

May will not offer any opponents the chance to further stall the withdrawal process and has now consulted lawyers who say she has the power to invoke the exit without a parlimanetary vote.

“The Prime Minister has been absolutely clear that the British public have voted and now she will get on with delivering Brexit [Britain leaving the European Union],” a Downing Street source told the newspaper.

The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union on June 23rd, but May has said she will not invoke article 50 before the end of the year to allow time to prepare a formal exit plan.

17.4 million people decided to support Brexit, while around 16.1 million voted to remain.

In order to start the process of leaving the European Union, a member state must inform Brussels about its intention and, then, formally begin negotiations on the matter.
