Thousands of Iraqi migrants who arrived in Finland in 2015 have requested to leave the country.

Many of the migrants cited disappointment with the life in the Nordic country for the reason they want to leave.

Local officials confirmed that around 4,100 asylum seekers had cancelled their applications and that number was likely to reach 5,000 in the coming months.

Europe is currently in the midst of one of the worst migrant crisis’ since World War Two, after over one million migrants arrived last year.

Germany and Sweden have bared the brunt of the influx of migrants but Finland saw the number of asylum seekers increase tenfold during 2015.

Over two thirds of the migrant were of Iraqi origin, most are now having second thoughts.

‘Some say the conditions in Finland and the lengthy asylum process did not meet their expectations.’ said Tobias van Treeck, programme officer at the International Organization for Migration.

It has emerged that over 80% of the migrants returning are Iraqis.

Germany, which took in 1.1 million people in 2015, has seen hardly any requests from Iraqi refugees choosing to go home.

Finland has been preparing to reject over 20,000 asylum seekers from 2015.
