President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday floated potential legal consequences for flag burning.

President-elect Trump was back on Twitter Tuesday morning, suggesting that anyone who burns an American flag should lose their U.S. citizenship or face a year in prison.

Laws prohibiting the burning or desecration of the American flag have been struck down by the Supreme Court, most recently in 1990, because they were found to have violated the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Attempts by Congress to enact new anti-desecration measures have been rejected by the Supreme Court.

This comes amid a debate at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, which has prompted numerous protests.

Hampshire decided to stop flying the American flag on its main flagpole after students allegedly burned one following Trump’s victory.
