WASHINGTON – Vice President-elect Mike Pence and his family are taking up residence in Washington, moving into a rental home in the Chevy Chase neighborhood.
Neighbors this week reported seeing moving vans and Secret Service agents outside a home in the affluent, tree-lined enclave, known for its family-friendly vibe. “It’s your vice president-elect, ma’am,” answered one officer when a resident asked who the security was protecting.
Pence, who is serving out his term as governor of Indiana before the Jan. 20 swearing-in, is also the head of the transition team for President-elect Donald Trump. That job means spending time in D.C. and New York, where Trump lives, “on a regular basis,” he said last week, according to the Indianapolis Star.
The Pences have lived in the governor’s mansion in Indianapolis since 2013, and they are expected to move into the vice president’s residence at the Naval Observatory after the current occupants, Joe and Jill Biden, clear out their stuff. The Bidens last week gave the Pences a tour of their soon-to-be digs, including (to Jill Biden’s embarrassment) a peek inside a closet where she had stashed her clutter.
The Pences have three children: Michael, 24, is a Marine Corps officer; Charlotte, 23, is a filmmaker; and Audrey, 21, is a Hanover College student. Good thing the couple is used to a roomy home: “We are now empty-nesters,” Karen Pence said when moving into the governor’s mansion. “We just didn’t think our nest was going to be this big.”
