Storms in the local area have caused over two feet of snow to gather in Red Mountain Pass, which has raised fears for motorists below.

The Department of Transportation has loaned a WW2 Howitzer from the U.S. Army to launch 105-millimeter missiles at area to clear snow.

The DoT said: ‘In order to keep the snow from hitting the road at the worst possible time, we go in and do some mitigation ahead of time,’

‘If we keep these paths knocked down as best we can with explosives, that means it’s less likely to come down in huge slab avalanches, which is one of the worst types,’ Mr Palmer said.

‘What we are trying to accomplish is keep people safe,’ he said.

The technique are used to create controlled avalanches, missiles area said to be the least expensive and most effective.

The missiles can travel up to 7 miles.
