Edgewater, New Jersey– Firefighters are battling a huge fire at a New Jersey apartment complex with flames and smoke visible from New York City across the Hudson River.
Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland has declared a local state of emergency after the devastating fire, announcing schools will be closed Thursday and roads will be restricted. These announcements are developing.
The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m., and raged on multiple floors of the Avalon Edgewater complex, at 102 Russell Ave. in Edgewater, Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2. The fire quickly spread to hundreds of units and was still burning violently five hours after it broke out.
