WATCH: Mexico’s Popocatepetl Volcano Erupts

WATCH: (Scroll Down For Video) CCTV footage has captured the moment a large volcano in Mexico began to erupt sending plumes of smoke and ash up to 6,000 feet into the air.

The last time it erupted was in 2000, and more than 40,000 people had to be evacuated from the local area.

The footage shows black smoke billowing out the top of the peak and lava can also be seen.

Authorities have no established a seven mile cordon around the volcano as a precautionary measure.

Locals have been advised to use a damp towel to cover their mouths and noses while outside.

Flights at the nearest airport in Puebla are running without disruption.

Popocatepetl is 43 miles south east of Mexico City and is one of the Mexico’s 14 active volcanoes.

In its last eruption in 2014, plumes of smoke and ash combined with low cloud cover caused chaos at local airports.
