WATCH: (Scroll Down For Video) Four people have become local heroes after they dived into a canal to rescue a mother and her child who were trapped inside a car.
Reports indicate that the mother was the driver of the white car and decided to park close to the Schinkel River in Amsterdam.
As she stepped out of the vehicle, it began to roll forward. She attempted to free her young toddler but the car plummeted into the canal.
The incident was captured on video and shows the selflessness of several young men who jumped into the canal to try and help.
The car then quickly began to sink in the deep area of the canal as rescuers attempted to open the doors to remove the mother and her child.
Local media said the four men carefully used stones to smash through the windows of the vehicle and carefully free the mother and toddler.
The mother and child were taken to a nearby hospital and have since been released.
‘I think every healthy young man would have jumped into the water’, Ruben Abrahams, one of the rescuers, reported to local media.
Locals have raised questions as to why the canal has not been fenced off.
