A 16 year old Santaquin, Utah girl died after she fell while hiking in Santaquin Canyon. She sustained significant injuries during the fall and efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, deputies say.

SANTAQUIN CANYON, Utah – On Monday, at about 10:25 AM, Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of a 16 year old girl who fell while hiking. The area where this happened is in Santaquin Canyon, about 4 miles from the entrance to the canyon.

Information said the girl sustained serious head and leg injuries and was not conscious or breathing. She was hiking with a friend near the top of a steep climb when she lost her footing while trying to cross a log. She then fell approximately 100 feet straight down.

The friend who was with her administered CPR until a Santaquin Police Officer and Deputies arrived. They took over CPR until Santaquin Ambulance crew members arrived. UCSO Search and Rescue and an AirMed helicopter also responded. After about 40 minutes of administering CPR medical personnel determined the girl was deceased.

The victim in this case is Kaylee Marvin, age 16, from Santaquin.

UCSO Detectives continue to investigate this case but at this point there is nothing suspicious and this death appears to be a tragic accident, officials said.

“Obviously this is a huge loss. A beautiful young lady now has tragically passed away from an unfortunate accident,” Lt. Tom Hodgson with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office told Fox 13 Salt Lake.

“She took a miss step she basically slipped while she was trying to navigate across a log,” said Hodgson. “With the water up there and the slick rocks the way they are, she just unfortunately didn’t put her feet in the right locations and slipped off the edge.”

Kaylee’s body will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s office in Taylorsville.
