Officials have confirmed that a construction accident at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York resulted in the deaths of two workers on Monday.

According to a spokesperson for the city Fire Department, the incident occurred in a trench close to Terminal 7 at approximately 11 a.m., when the workers became trapped under construction debris.

Approximately 60 firefighters were involved in the effort to extract the workers from the trench, but tragically both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. The workers’ identities have not yet been made public.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the operation of the airport, has released a statement indicating that it will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
