Sheboygan, WI — On Friday, Sheboygan Police responded to Memorial Hospital after receiving a report of a 35-month-old female with substantial injuries consistent with abuse was being treated in their emergency room.

The investigation revealed that a 25-year-old male caregiver had transported the unresponsive child to Memorial Hospital shortly before police were contacted. The man was in a relationship with the victim’s mother and was caring for the child at his residence. The child was later transported to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin by Flight For Life.

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin staff diagnosed severe life-threatening injuries to the child as a result of blunt force trauma consistent with abuse. The caregiver was taken into custody Friday and held on a probation hold while the investigation progressed.

On Monday, Sheboygan Police referred charges to the Sheboygan County District Attorney’s Office for review including felony physical abuse of a child and possession of marijuana on the male caregiver. The suspect remains in custody at the Sheboygan County Detention Center while the District Attorney reviews the case.

The child remains in the intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

The investigation is ongoing. The Sheboygan County Department of Social Services is also assisting in the investigation.
