NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE — The 23-year-old man shot at 8:10 p.m. Friday outside Whites Creek High School died shortly before midnight at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The victim is identified as James G. Nevils of Augusta Drive.

The investigation to this point shows that Nevils came to Whites Creek to attend a basketball game.  At halftime, Nevils told those around him that he was going to the restroom, but, instead, walked outside.  He crossed from the driveway outside the gymnasium to a nearby sidewalk where he met with two young men.  After conversing with them for 20 to 30 seconds, Nevils was shot.  He collapsed on the sidewalk.

The two persons with whom he had been talking fled into the darkness.  A friend of Nevils went to check on him, discovered that he had been shot, and notified authorities inside the school.  Several uniformed police officers were working inside the building at the time.  A lockout procedure was initiated for the safety of all.  The basketball game continued while the investigation progressed outside of the building.

North Precinct detectives are interviewing Nevils’ friends and associates in an effort to learn why he went outside at halftime and whether he was expecting to meet someone.

Anyone with information on the two persons responsible for Nevils’ murder is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.  Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000. Persons can also send an electronic tip by texting the word “CASH” along with the message to 274637 (CRIMES), or online at www.nashvillecrimestoppers.com.
