3 shot by police, 1 killed, outside Virginia gas station

HAMPTON, Virginia — The Hampton Police Division has made multiple arrests in connection with an Officer Involved Shooting Incident that occurred on October 17, 2017.

On October 17, 2017, at 11:17 p.m., a Newport News Police officer and a task force officer from the Williamsburg Police Department observed a Ford pickup truck traveling in the area of 21st Street and Orcutt Avenue. Further investigative efforts by the officers revealed that the pickup truck was stolen from the city of Chesapeake.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the officers began following the vehicle and at 11:19 p.m., the stolen pickup truck then pulled into the 7–11 convenience store parking lot located in the 700 block of Kecoughtan Road. As officers attempted to make contact with the occupants of the vehicle a firearm was displayed in the direction of one of the officers. In an attempt to flee from the area, the suspect vehicle was driven towards both officers and their unmarked police vehicle, striking it. There were five firearms that were recovered by the officers on scene.

Three suspects were injured as a result of the gunfire and transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. DeAndre Bethea, a 24-year-old Newport News man, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased after arriving at the hospital. The other two individuals remain hospitalized for treatment of their injuries.

Multiple individuals have been arrested in connection to this incident. Darone Cortoin Owens, an 18-year-old Newport News man, has been arrested and charged with one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, one count of Concealed Weapon, and one count of Grand Larceny. Leroy Clyburn III, a 20-year-old Newport News man, has been charged with one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Violent Felon and one count of Grand Larceny. A 17-year-old Newport News male juvenile was charged with one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Minor and one count of Grand Larceny. Another 17-year-old Newport News male juvenile was charged with one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Violent Felon and one count of Grand Larceny. All individuals remain in custody.
