Cape May Court House, New Jersey – A toddler has died after she fell into a septic tank at a New Jersey campground Saturday night, according to police.

Around 9:30 pm that night, the Lower Township Police Department received a 911 call and responded to Sun Outdoors Campground located in the 600 block of Route 9 in Erma.

The first officers on scene found the unresponsive 3 year old girl who had been pulled out of a sewage septic tank.

The girl was transported to the Cape Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead later that evening.

On the morning of April 4, 2021, the Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the girl and the cause and manner of death are pending the final autopsy report.

Police say the investigation has not revealed any signs of foul play.

“There was a tragic accident involving a child that occurred last night at our campground in Cape May, and first we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family as they face this incredibly difficult time,” a spokesperson for Sun Communities told PEOPLE in a statement. “This was a devastating accident, and our thoughts are with the family and we also stand ready to provide any comfort and support they may need.”

The local prosecutor said this tragic incident is still under investigation but appears to be an accident.
