LOS ANGELES — A man was charged after a 4-year-old boy was able to access his shotgun and shot the child’s mother.

24-year-old Brandon Gilbert Ambriz of Norwalk faces four counts of child abuse and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

The District Attorney says Ambriz was convicted of two burglaries, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger and accessory after the fact between 2013 and 2017.

Ambriz allegedly left the shotgun in a vehicle in which children were regularly driven, prosecutors said. On Jan. 23, the 4-year-old shot his mother while she was in the driver’s seat and he was in the back.

Three other children in the vehicle were not injured, prosecutors added.

If convicted as charged, Ambriz faces a possible maximum sentence of more than 25 years in state prison.
