NASHVILLE – A 10-year-old 4th grader at Tulip Grove Elementary School brought an unloaded nine-millimeter pistol to school Monday. Another student reported to school personnel that he had the gun. The principal secured the weapon and called police.
The student reported that he took a gun belonging to a relative from under a bed and that his relative was unaware that he had taken it.
Police said given his age, the student was permitted to leave school in the custody of his guardian. Youth Services officers will be sending a report to Juvenile Court for review.
Parents at the school were sent this email:
Good Afternoon – Parents. This call is to inform you that one of our students brought a weapon to school today. Our school is committed to the safety and education of all our students. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise. A staff member discovered the weapon, and the student was immediately removed from other students. The weapon was confiscated, and their was no ammunition. The MNPD is investigating the situation and criminal charges may be brought in addition to school imposed disciplinary measures. We have learned that the student brought the weapon for protection and not with intent to harm. The student involved will be subject to school board policy and appropriate laws that govern weapons on school grounds. Please discuss this incident with your children and emphasize that it is against the law to bring weapons of any type to school. Also, please emphasize the importance of telling you or a staff member if there is a weapon at school. In this way, we are all working together to keep our school safe.
