Officials say a child was shot while playing basketball in Middletown, Maryland Monday.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Middletown Memorial Park on South Church Street in Middletown at 12:20 p.m. for reports of a shooting.
A 7 year-old boy suffered an apparent gunshot wound in the leg while playing basketball at the park. He was transported via helicopter to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment where he remains in stable condition.
Investigators do not believe a gun was fired in the immediate area of the park and believe the shot may have come from further away. There is no indication that the boy was targeted or that the shooting was intentional, but the investigation is ongoing.
Initially on scene there was a description given of a person who had been walking in the area at the time of the incident; that person was located and found not be involved in any way. There was no other suspect description available for anyone believed to have fired the shot.
Witnesses on scene described hearing gunshots in the distance that sounded like a potential target shooting. Call police if you have information.
