The leak occurred at Tyson’s Chick-N-Quick in Rogers, Ark.
Twenty-three people were hospitalized with inhalation injuries.
According to the chief, at least one patient was unconscious and several are having trouble breathing. Two are listed in serious condition.
Contractors were doing maintenance on the roof of the plant, and a “small amount” of an ammonia smell was pulled into the plant through the air conditioning system, according to a news release from Tyson.
