BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — A 9-year-old boy was killed in a sledding accident near Nashville Tuesday afternoon, police say. The fire department initially reported the child’s age as 10.

Police say the boy was riding on a tube, along with three other children, while being pulled down Seward Road by an ATV driven by the boy’s father. The tube, while sliding through the snow and ice, collided with a mailbox. The boy suffered critical injuries and was transported to Vanderbilt where he died. The three other children were not injured.

“Our hearts go out to this family during this time,” Brentwood police said in a statement. “This tragedy serves as a reminder of the dangers that can be associated with sledding.”

Police did not say if the father would face criminal charges. Although, the incident remains under investigation.
