Attempted stabbing of NJ store clerk labeled a bias crime, cops say

CLIFTON, NJ – Police say a man from Clifton, New Jersey attempted to stab a store clerk Friday in what they call a ‘bias incident.’

Shairo Gil, 24, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, in the attempted stabbing of a female store clerk. Gil was also charged with second degree aggravated assault and first-degree bias intimidation, among other counts.

According to Prosecutors: Gil entered the Barrales Grocery, located on Main Avenue in Clifton, where he walked up to the store clerk, and without provocation, pulled out a knife and attempted to stab the clerk in the chest. The investigation revealed that Gil was purposely targeting any individual of Mexican descent, and that he chose the victim because he believed her to be of Mexican descent.

Attempted Murder is a crime of the first degree. If convicted, Mr. Gil faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in State Prison. If Mr. Gil is convicted of the Bias Crime charge, he faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in State Prison. Second degree Aggravated Assault carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in State Prison. Third degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in State Prison, and fourth degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon carries a maximum sentence of 18 months in State Prison. Gil is currently being held at Passaic County Jail awaiting his initial appearance at Central Judicial Processing.
