Authorities Name 11-Year-Old As Suspect In Murder of Colorado Woman

MONTROSE COUNTY, Colo. — Authorities say an 11-year-old is responsible for the deadly shooting of a Colorado woman earlier this month.

On December 19 around 9:00 p.m., Montrose County Sheriff’s Office deputies and responded to 16252 Shavano Valley Road, for a report of a woman who had a gunshot wound. The victim, later identified as Karmen Keefauver, 62, was transported to Montrose Memorial Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division and Colorado Bureau of Investigations began investigating the incident. In the course of the investigation and during interviews, deputies say “it was determined that an 11-year-old was involved in the shooting death of Karmen Keefauver.”

This case was determined to be a homicide and the juvenile suspect was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder. The juvenile is currently being housed at the Grand Mesa Youth Services.

“The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office gives our deepest condolences to the family of Karmen Keefauver for their tragic loss,” the department said in a press release.

The motive for the shooting was not revealed, nor has the relationship between the juvenile and Keefauver been made public.
