NEW YORK — Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who is expected to declare his candidacy for the Democratic Party presidential nomination this week, and self-described democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders are the first and second place candidates in a new Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll released Wednesday.
The poll, conducted from April 17 to 23, was aimed at the vote preferences of 2,237 Democrats and political independents — with Biden receiving 24 percent of support and Sanders clinching 15 percent. Sanders is still the top in the crowded field as Biden remains on the outside for now.
No other candidate received more than 7 percent of support and 21 percent said they are not aware of which candidate they would back in the upcoming statewide contents ahead of the 2020 general election, which start with Iowa in February.
The poll measures how potential electorates are feeling now, with the poll explaining that “many may change their minds as they become better acquainted with the candidates. It has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of 2 percentage points for the combined group of Democrats and independents.”
The best for bipartisanship?
Reuters/Ipsos reported that their Democratic candidates poll found Biden at the top again for bipartisan favour with 88 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of independents and 39 percent of the Republican Party having a “favourable” impression of the former vice president.
Sanders and upstart Pete Buttigieg both have 58 percent favourable view from Americans. All three have stronger bipartisan appeal than current President Donald Trump who sits at 44 percent favourability among adults.
