Body-Cam Video Released After Police Fatally Shoot Suicidal Elderly Man Inside His Home

BALTIMORE, MD – The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Riverdale Park, Maryland.

On September 19, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers with the Riverdale Park Police Department responded to a home in the 4700 block of Oglethorpe Street in Riverdale Park for the report of a suicidal man who had access to firearms. Once on scene, officers spoke for several minutes with the man at the front door of the home. The man retreated inside the home and then to an upstairs bedroom. Officers followed the man inside the home and gave him commands to stop. The man did not comply. Once inside the bedroom, the man pointed a handgun at officers. One officer discharged their firearm, striking the man.

Officers rendered aid until medical personnel arrived. The man was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The decedent was identified as 75-year-old Bryan Coupal, of Riverdale Park.

The investigation is ongoing.
